Now we all know nowadays that watching things on demand or online is the way to go. Netflix isn't any different. In case you didn't know and read from my Home page, my name is Jasmine and I am passionate about the media/entertainment industry. I literally will absorb any info and research what is going on in the entertainment industry.
With that being said, here are some tips I picked up in the Latinos in Creative Animation in Netflix panel series.
1) Be friendly to everyone
Now this might be a strange thing to say and should probably be intuitive, BUT it needs to be said. Attending this panel, I learned from the executives that you need to be friendly with everyone as first, you don't know who you're meeting. One of the executives actually went to high school with Josh Gad. He went on saying that Gad would mention that he was going to be an actor and be in movies. Little did this executive know that, yes, Josh did and went on becoming Olaf in Frozen and other shows! Because this executive stayed in touch, Gad invited him to be a part of a production and work with him. Next thing you know, he now is at Netflix.
2) Actually follow your passion
In the Latino community, it is pretty common for family to want us to go to college and get a "normal" job. Yes, there is nothing wrong with becoming a lawyer, doctor, etc, but you DON'T have to if that isn't your passion. One of the executives mentioned that she went to school for animation despite her parents protests.
3) Don't follow the stereotypes if you don't want to
With the current culture climate, many executives or productions want to diversify the team and shows. However, because of this, many Latinos are type cast or put in a box of what content they should be producing or working on. Latinos should and could produce horror, comedy, etc without always focusing on a typical latino story surrounded about family.
